Doncaster Racecourse: Countdown on to St Leger
TICKETS for our Ladbrokes St Leger Festival went on sale earlier this week.
Always a special week in our calendar – going on sale with tickets marks the start of the official countdown to the world famous festival.
Our four-day festival pass provides access to all four days of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, and this year’s pass is available from just £29.
Elsewhere Ffos Las, one of our sister racecourses, hosted their biggest day of the year on Saturday, headlined by the Welsh Champion Hurdle which was won by Medinas under Wayne Hutchinson.
This progressive six year old trained by Alan King wore down local runner Peckhamecho close home, with the well backed Tanerko Emery back in third.
The trainer said afterwards the Coral Cup would be his preferred target at the popular Cheltenham Festival.
The West Wales National also gave us a great finish, with Carruthers holding off Cannington Brook.
Carruthers, a Hennessy Gold Cup winner at his peak had fallen into the doldrums before winning at this venue on Boxing Day, and made it two from two at Ffos Las under a great ride by Nico De Boinville.
Another notable milestone was Andrew Thornton riding Ugly Bug to victory at Ffos Las, meaning he has now had a winner at every National Hunt course in his glittering career.
Musselburgh hosted their ‘Trials Day’ on Sunday, with recent Doncaster winner Overturn the star attraction.
He didn’t disappoint either, making all and winning with the minimum of fuss by 29 lengths from Tetlami.
He is so nimble and fast at his fences, and has to be a big threat to Simonsig in the Arkle Trophy in March.
In next week’s column, I’ll reflect on the big Champion Hurdle trial, the Listed 32Red.com Hurdle at Doncaster which ran on Monday.
It featured the reigning champion Rock On Ruby, Triumph Hurdle and Fighting Fifth hurdle winner Countrywide Flame and Christmas Hurdle winner and current second favourite for the Champion Hurdle, Darlan.
Doncaster also race today, Thursday 7 February for another Jumps meeting – and at the time of writing it looks as if the novice hurdles are certainly races to watch.
They will contain lots of nice types from powerful stables.
