Happy with 7-1 rout
BARNSLEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE WOMBWELL Main took a giant step towards the Premier Division title with an emphatic 7-1 thrashing of Lundwood.
With Athersley Recreation not in action at the weekend, Main threw down the gauntlet to their title challengers by extending their lead to five points in spectacular fashion.
Main enjoyed the bulk of possession in the first half but despite the pressure went into the interval with just a one goal cushion courtesy of Dean Sidebottom.
But that goal set the tone for a pulsating second half as Main ran their opponents ragged with six further strikes, Troy Bennett bagging four goals and James Manley adding another two to his season's tally.
Lundwood did finally managed to get on the scoresheet late on but the damage had already been done.
At the other end of the table, Hoyland Town grabbed a valuable 2-1 win over Tommy Treddlehoyle, who suffered a hangover following their victory in the Supplementary Trophy Final.
Town, were a shadow of the team that were beaten 9-0 last week and found themselves two up inside twenty minutes through James Shaw and Danny Galvin.
Tred came back strong after the interval and were handed a fortuitous penalty, which was converted by Luke Forgione but an equaliser was beyond them.
Scott Clarke netted a hat-trick as Royston Steelers A continued their impressive winning habit with a thumping 10-1 win over strugglers New Lodge.
Paul Jackson and Andy Haywood both bagged a brace apiece while further markers from Craig Robinson, Glenn Walton and Jonny Jackson completed the romp.
In Division One, a solitary strike by Paul Hewitt handed South Hiendley a shock 1-0 win over leaders Royston Steelers B.
But second placed Great Dane failed to close the gap as they were humbled 4-2 by Dodworth Miners Welfare, which kept their promotion hopes alive.
Blackerhill Rovers maintained their late surge for a promotion place with a convincing 2-0 win over Old Town with first half goals from Ryan Poskitt and James Wood enough to seal the win.
