Golf Weekly: Prior wins Bessacarr Medal

NICK Prior won the prestigious Bessacarr Medal competition at Doncaster Golf Club, writes John Molloy.

In a closely contested event, Prior was the winner with a net 65.

He finished one shot ahead of Clive Whitfield with 66.

In Division One Scott Freeman led with 66, followed by Jon Whiteley and Robin Newton (both 67).

There was a five-way tie for fourth place on 68 involving Simon Causier, Derek Robinson, Simon Fearns, Bob Winfield and R Woodcock.

There was also a tie at the head of Division Two between Stuart Hall and Ivan Legard on 66.

Joint third on 68 were John Haigh and Ben Ward.

Leading Division Three was Graham Mould (69) with Gordon Bell (70) second.

The Ladies’ Stableford went to Jean Pascoe on countback from Diane Wade, both having finished with 34 points.

Joint third were Linda Bell, Brenda Ambrose and Jayne Daughtrey (33) followed by Barbara Petch and Anne Shillitto (both 31).

The Hupple Cups Medal (Betterball) was won by Rosalie Haywood and Janet Green whose net 73 edged out Kim Turner and Sheila Spafford on countback.

Maureen Monks and Bev Gallagher (74) claimed third spot, followed by Sue Salmon and Beryl Batchelor (75).

The Mixed Monday Stableford resulted in a four-way tie on 37 points between Paul Foster, Mansell Heslip, Louise Parkin and A Lubeck.

There was another four-way tie for fifth place on 36 points involving Graham Needham, G Rennoldson, Terri-Ann Whiteley and Philip Bennett.

The Sunday Niblicks Stableford was won by John West (37) on countback from Andrew Banister.

Third place went to John Naylor (35).

The NFA Stableford went to Grant Freeman on countback from Colin Straw both having 39 points.

Thornhurst Park’s Midweek Stableford had to be decided on countback with the first three all scoring 42.

Chris Frost came out on top, followed by Derek Rowland and Ken Palmer.

There was no such problem in the Monthly Stableford, with Ken Hall (36) beating Dave Smith (35) and Norman Collier (34).

Paul Curtiss won the Sunday Stableford with 38 points ahead of Simon Oldfield (37) and Donald Whalley (36).

The Wheatley Ladies Medal 10 saw a clear win for Karen Wilkinson with net 73, ahead of Joanne Mosby and Marilyn Mell (both 77).

The Butler Cup Bogey Competition went to Val Sumner (+4) ahead of Cynthia Porter (+3).

Doncaster Town Moor’s Club Stableford Qualifier was won by Jack Bedford with 40 points on countback from Steve Hathaway.

The Gents Open Am-Am went to a fourball from several clubs consisting of H Allan, D Woodhead, J Stead and P Jones scoring 88 points.

In second place with 87 points was a Town Moor fourball comprising Stewart Morris, Ian Bennett, Shaun Roberts and Allan Leedale.

They were followed in third place on 86 points by a joint Town Moor/Loughborough team of Liam Wilkin, Tim Slesser, Scott Rich and C Delonski.
