'Gate do like to be beside the seaside
NORTHERN COUNTIES EAST LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC 1 PARKGATE 3 THE STEELMEN inflicted only the second home defeat on Scarborough to seal an unlikely double and take a massive step towards survival.
Scarborough started the livelier and could have taken an early lead when a corner found Graham Botham who shot just wide. But after soaking up the early pressure, Parkgate found their feet. Jamie Jones went close after Ryan Johnson put him in.
An end to end affair played out. Scarborough broke and Mark Griffin put clear Danny Moore who forced a fine save from Tom Hewitt.
Johnson saw his header comfortably claimed by a the well placed Glen Powley. Hewitt was soon in action at the other end as he denied Danny Gray with his legs.
As half time approached Scarborough thought they were ahead when Ryan Blott turned the ball towards an open goal only for James Mitchell to appear from no where and clear off the line.
The breakthrough came for Parkgate on 39 minutes. Leon Wainman weaved past two defenders and crossed to the back post where Jones rose to head home.
On the stroke of half time the lead was doubled. The Scarborough defence were stagnant as Andy Gascoigne cut into the area from the right and drilled home from 18 yards into the far corner.
Parkgate continued their unfortunate habit of conceding early after the break. Griffin played Blott through to slot home, a goal which inspired Scarborough to search for the equaliser.
Sound defending kept Parkgate ahead while Hewitt was on hand to save a Blott effort with his legs.
So when Parkgate added a third on 70 minutes, the game was effectively done and dusted. Nathan Swindells broke clear and left himself with only the keeper to beat, firing into the bottom right corner.
Scarborough had nothing to lose and almost reduced the deficit when Blott found himself in a great position in front of goal, only to fire way over the bar.
The win was Parkgate's first double of the campaign and an impressive win over the ambitious yet homeless phoenix-from-the-flames club.
The Steelmen now sit six points clear of third bottom Shirebrook Town and a further six points clear of second bottom Lincoln Moorlands Railway.
On Saturday they host Long Eaton United at Green Lane before travelling the short distance to local rivals and relegation certs Brodsworth Welfare on Wednesday evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.
