LOCAL Northern Counties East League side Askern Villa have been handed home advantage against Northern League leaders West Auckland Town in the third round or the Carlsberg FA Vase on Saturday week (3pm).
Askern have already disposed of four teams who play the next level (5) in the competition - Silsden (away) 5-2, Hall Road Rangers (home) 1-0, Selby Town (home) 3-1 and Padiham (away) 5-2.
“Meeting another level 5 team doesn’t faze us in any way,” said secretary Dave Hall. “We have the home advantage, and we are probably the lowest ranked club left in the competition, so every game is going to be a tough one from now on if we are to progress in the FA Vase.
“Having had a quick look at West Auckland’s results this season a couple of wins over Whitley Bay looks impressive. Whitley Bay have won the FA Vase for the last three seasons.
“In the Vase this season they’ve beaten Cleator Moor Celtic (home) 3-1, Marske United (away) 6-2, Shildon (away) 3-2 after extra time, Bacup Borough (home) 3-1. Bacup are one place above Padiham in the North-West Counties League Premier Division.
“This is the most high profile sporting event to take place in Askern, probably since the early 1930s when the rugby club played Wigan in the Rugby League Challenge Cup first round.
“We are hoping that local community will come along to the Welfare Grounds on December 3.”
The draw includes: Squires Gate v Staveley MW, Dunston UTS v Parkgate, Askern Villa v West Auckland Town, Peterborough Northern Star v Armthorpe Welfare, Whitley Bay v Bridlington Town.
To be played on December 3.
