United denied a win by home keeper’s efforts

TABLE-TOPPING Scotter defeated the third placed Isle side in a closely fought match in this Jack Kalson Under 14s League match.

Epworth had an early chance when a ball from George Wigham was picked up by Oliver Munday but the home keeper ran out to clear the danger.

The hosts pushed forward and Jordan Oliver had to use his power and speed at the back to thwart a number of chances.

Scotter, however, took the lead when a forward struck the ball home from the edge of the box.

Ethan Robinson almost equalised straight after with a left wing run but his cross in front of goal was cleared.

Another Robinson shot was repulsed and the subsequent corner safely dealt with by the home keeper.

A Brad Rusling save ensured the hosts did not extend their lead and before half time United again came close to an equaliser when a ball from Luke Willerton saw Munday clip the crossbar.

Cal Smith volleyed the ball for Munday but again the home keeper denied him a shot.

Owen Petch played a neat ball through to Robinson on the edge of half time but this was also cleared. In the second half Rusling again denied Scotter, tipping the ball away for a corner which came to nothing.

Wigham battled through the home back four but his shot was swept away by Scotter’s in-form keeper and a ball from George Algar found Munday also denied by the home stopper.

Rusling again made another crucial stop but he could do nothing about Scotter’s second goal when the hosts took advantage of a narrow gap in defence to bury the ball in the net.

Substitute Harry Higgins made his presence felt and a ball to Munday was then crossed for Robinson whose effort was cleared for a corner.

The ensuing set piece was saved and Scotter claimed maximum points as they held on for a 2-0 victory.
