Stocksbridge Park Steels chase points at Carlton Town

Stocksbridge Park Steels go to Carlton Town with just one point and one place separating the teams in 17th and 16th places. And manager Chris Hilton admits it’s a game his side need to get something from.

“We can’t lose, we have to go there and et something. A win would be great but if we can’t get that then a point would be good, but we have to come away something,” said Hilton. The Steels boss gave a few players a run-out in order to gain some match fitness in the mid-week 2-1 league cup defeat at Brighouse Town. However, Hilton’s aim to revert more or less to the same line-up that drew with Coalville Town last weekend for the trip to Carlton has been hit by injury; striker Lee Garside is ruled out for 10 days.

”Lee has a gash to the side of the head which has had to be glued after he clashed heads at Brighouse” explained Hilton. “We may have to change our shape with Lee out. It’s disappointing as he’s been playing well lately.”

Garside absence could be softened if Hilton can bring in a new striker in. “We talking to an experienced striker that has played at this level and above and who will give us some pace, hopefully we can have it sorted out for Saturday.”

Reflecting on the 2-1 defeat at Brighouse, Hilton said: “We were the better team overall. But they came back well and perhaps in the end deserved the win. If I’m honest, I’m not too disappointed at going out. We like to win every game but the priority is making sure we stay in this league.” Sheffield FC face a tough trip to leaders Sutton Coldfield Town and a second successive game on the 3G pitch at Coles Lane having lost 4-2 against Romulus just last weekend - they ground share with Sutton.

Playing on the artificial surface on a regular basis has certainly helped Sutton who have won seven and drawn two of nine league games.

Nevertheless interim boss Jordan Broadbent believes his side are capable of winning there: “We’re a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde side. But I have this thought in the back of my mind that we can go there and come away with the win. We go there without fear. We know we’ve got goals in the team and can score so we won’t be going to defend.”

In the Premier Division, Frickley Athletic host Ashton United boosted by a 2-0 league Cup victory at FA Cup giant killers Blyth Spartans on Tuesday. Manager Karl Rose will be hoping they can carry their cup form into the league.

Matlock Town go in search of only a second away league win of the season at Stamford where the Gladiators will be hoping to avenge the Daniels 2-1 win at Causeway Lane in August. Buxton travel to FC United of Manchester in a qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

It will be the third meeting between the teams this season with both the league games ending in 1-1 draws.
