Nigel Adkins has outlined the qualities which convinced him to name Jay McEveley as Sheffield United’s new captain, writes James Shield.

Adkins, who takes charge of his first competitive fixture at Gillingham tomorrow since being appointed manager two months ago, described the defender as an “outstanding professional” who will “embrace” the responsibility.

“We want standards to be set,” Adkins told The Star. “It’s all about how you conduct yourself, how you train, how you get the best out of other players and having the respect of the whole group.

“Jay has certainly got that.”

McEveley replaces Michael Doyle who vacated the role after being released last season.

United begin the new League One campaign with a visit to Priestfield and Adkins added: “Together with Collo (Neill Collins), Jay is an experienced centre-half.

“Every morning they come in and they do exactly the eight things. All the time, every training session, every warm-up, every single day.

“Jay is a talented player and a good character. And I take people on face value.

“Having the armband will make him even better and I think he’ll embrace the job.”
