Billy Sharp has endorsed Sheffield United’s decision to sign James Wilson after describing what it is like to play against the former Oldham Athletic centre-half.

Wilson agreed a two year contract with Chris Wilder’s side on Monday after impressing during a week long trial.

Although United plan to sign at least one more defender before the new season begins next months, Sharp said: “He (Wilson) has kicked me a few times, he’s a tough defender if you like.

“He likes to dominate in the air, is no-nonsense and that’s what we’ve been missing; someone who is really aggressive and like to stop other people, other strikers, getting the better of us.”

Wilson faced Sharp three times last term with United’s new captain scoring once when they two clubs met at Bramall Lane in March.

Capped once by Wales, Wilson has been told by Wilder that he has “a point to prove” after electing to leave Boundary Park. Sharp, however, revealed the 27-year-old is already making his presence felt ahead of tomorrow’s pre-season friendly at Stocksbridge Park Steels. (Kick-off 3pm).

“I’ve actually played against James a few times at the different clubs he’s been at. He’s been a top lad, he’s mixed in really well and the lads here have been good with him also. Hopefully he can be a good part of the squad.”
