Sheffield United: Chris bashes hoodoo talk

Chris Basham has rubbished talk of a play-off hoodoo as Sheffield United attempt to make it seventh time lucky in the end-of-season knockouts, writes James Shield.

Nigel Clough’s side enter tomorrow’s final match of the League One campaign against fellow contenders Chesterfield guaranteed a top six finish after drawing at Leyton Orient last weekend.

But despite their litany of failure since the tournament was revamped, Basham said: “The history, in that sense, means nothing. Nothing at all.

“There are three games, hopefully, and we want to win them all. Nobody has even spoken about it apart from the media and a few other people. It’s not been mentioned among us.”

United last qualified in 2013 before bowing-out to Yeovil Town at the semi-final stage.

Basham, who arrived from Blackpool 11 months ago, added: “The good thing is, only a few of us were here at the time. There are a lot of new lads here who don’t know anything about it.

“The fans will but most of us don’t. I can understand why they might be a little bit nervous but we’re hoping to make them happy.

“It’s a clean slate, we’ve got lads in here who have been promoted. I’m not even thinking about it, I’m not bothered about it at all.”

United are fifth in the table - one place and two points above the visitors - having also reached the last four of the Capital One Cup.

“We’re very close knit,” Basham said. “We’re very much a team rather than a collection of individuals.

“If it means someone coming off the bench, like Che (Adams) did against Tottenham, and doing the business then so be it because we’re all in this together.

“Even the staff, they’ve all been brilliant too. They are right behind us as always.”
