Nigel Clough believes Sheffield United’s 125th anniversary celebrations can inspire his team to greatness this season, writes James Shield.

Some of Bramall Lane’s most celebrated names, including members of its most recent promotion winning sides, are set to attend a gala ceremony commemorating the landmark event at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre tonight.

And Clough said: “The players will see the high esteem those people are held in by the supporters. They’ll sense that and want, in the future, to enjoy exactly the same status.

“Hopefully we’ve got one or two on their way to doing that now.

“This is the most important period. Right now. It has to be that way.

“But it’s exactly right that you should honour what’s gone on before. It gives you a sense of place and reminds you that we’re at a very special club.”

Clough, speaking ahead of this afternoon’s League One encounter against Gillingham, also responded to his counterpart Peter Taylor’s claim that the visitors are “looking forward” to visiting Bramall Lane after paying tribute to its “great atmosphere and support.”

“All the best teams have that fear factor and we want that here,” Clough said. “People will always enjoy coming here because it’s a great stadium but don’t want them to enjoy the football side of things.

“Teams don’t fear going to Old Trafford at the moment but that will come back. They used to going there thinking ‘Great, this is a brilliant place to play’ but knowing they were going to get battered.”
