Stocksbridge Park Steels host Romulus this weekend and are looking for a first win and first goal in four games.
Manager Chris Hilton believes they are on the right track despite losing 2-0 at home against Rainworth Miners Welfare in the week “I’ve had nothing but praise for them on Tuesday,” said Hilton.
“We threw everything at Rainworth including the kitchen sink. We had 70 to 75% of the game and were camped in their half in the second half and hit the post and crossbar. Fair play to them they withstood what we threw at them, they broke away twice and scored with their only two chances. But if we keep playing like that we’ll win games.”
Hilton added: “Our ball retention could be better and we need to keep concentration levels up. We are getting punished for every little mistake but we’ve got to keep going and not feel sorry for ourselves.”
Nineteenth-placed Steels could have two new faces to face Romulus. “We’ve signed Lee Thompson from Belper Town” confirmed Hilton. “He’s experienced and can operate in midfield or full back and will help our younger players. Hopefuly we could have another through the door before Saturday.
“Cecil Nyoni is joining Goole, he’s had a good offer that we can’t match. I’m gutted to be losing such a good player but there is not a lot you can do.”
Elsewhere, Frickley Athletic aim to continue their improvement against Ramsbottom United at Westfield Lane. The Blues have picked up four points from last two outings against top half teams FC United and Workington. Matlock Town host Whitby Town looking for a first win in five. Boss Mark Atkins is likely to hand Lawrence Gorman a debut after the defender signed on dual registration basis with Conference neighbours Alfreton Town.
Sheffield FC are in FA Cup action and a trip to Evo-Stik North side Workington for a second qualifying round tie. Mick Wadsworth’s side have yet to win on the road this season but there would be no better place than to start. However, they will have to overcome a Warrington side that are unbeaten seven outings.
Club could be without their play maker Richard Stirrup after the midfielder hobbled off in Tuesday 3-2 home defeat against Lincoln United.
Buxton host Northern League Division One strugglers Newcastle Benfield. Martin McIntosh’s men will be expected to record a eighth straight win.
