New duo Danny Ward and Adam Hammill have been tipped to hit peak condition for Rotherham United in double-quick time.
The pair, both signed from Huddersfield, made their debuts for their Millers at Brentford on Saturday, but Ward hadn’t started a game since November and Hammill had featured only twice since August.
“I think they’re good players. They’ll enhance and improve us and we just need to get them sharper,” Millers manager Steve Evans said,
“It’s not about fitness. They’re impeccably fit, and pride themselves on that, but there’s no match sharpness in there. That will come. It takes a week.
“The one thing about Hammill and the one thing about Ward is that they are top Championship players - Hammill’s played in the Premier League - but they didn’t fit in with another manager’s plans.”
Evans reassured fans that there will be no repeat of the Luciano Becchio situation where the Millers had to spend more than a month bringing him up to speed.
“This isn’t a Becchio case where it took five weeks just to get him in shape,” he said
“These boys are in good shape, we just need to return their sharpness.
Winger Febian Brandy has joined League One Rochdale after leaving the Millers last week.
