Mark Marshall’s 89th minute goal won it for Port Vale as Barnsley’s four-match unbeaten away run was ended in dramatic style this afternoon.
Michael O’Connor’s 25th minute opener was the difference between the two sides as the Valiants dominated for much of the first half.
Conor Hourihane’s sixth goal of the season looked to have spared the Reds blushes against the second from bottom Valiants this afternoon.
Michael O’Connor’s 25th minute strike gave the managerless Valiants the lead, before midfielder Hourihane equalised from the penalty spot just before the hour mark.
But the dangerous Marshall ghosted through to net the winner with a minute remaining and secure three well-deserved points.
There was plenty of drama during an entertaining contest.
Left-back Joe Dudgeon conceded a needless free-kick in the 23rd minute and a minute later O’Connor stepped up to curl his shot past the helpless Ross Turnbull.
The Reds were forced to weather a real storm of pressure in the opening 45 minutes, although strikers Leroy Lita and Devante Cole both had chances.
But goalscorer O’Connor had a moment of madness in the 58th minute as he bundled over Conor Hourihane to concede a penalty.
And it was Hourihane who stepped up to fire home the spot-kick with the ball sneaking in off the inside of the post.
However, centre-back Jean-Yves Mvoto pushed over Jordan Slew in the box and conceded a penalty at the other end.
Slew blasted two yards over and the Reds might have thought they would escape with a point, but some poor defending allowed Marshall to rifle past Ross Turnbull, making his debut in net, to steal maximum points.Port Vale: Neal, Yates, Dickinson (c), McGivern, Duffy, Dodds, Lines, Pope, O’Connor, Marshall, Slew.Subs: Johnson, Robertson, Williamson, Daniel, Brown, Jennings, Moore.
