Manager Steve Evans can now put on his sombrero and flip-flops for real as Rotherham United saw out their Championship campaign with a goalless draw at Leeds United.

It wasn’t the most exciting fare of the season, but the main thing is that the Millers will be a second-tier side again next year after Tuesday’s win over Reading, despite their three-point Football League deduction.

It meant Evans’ side finished the last four matches unbeaten.

True to his word, the Millers boss turned up at Elland Road wearing a sombrero, T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops after a social-media campaign calling for him to don the outfit.

Twice in the dying minutes Rotherham goalkeeper Emi Martinez had to make good saves, from a Rudolph Austin shot and a Sol Bamba header. and a minute before the end of normal time Millers substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris sent a fiercely-struck free-kick wide.

The visitors soaked up Leeds pressure after the break and were worth their point, having been the best side in the first half.

They had the clearest chance before the interval, but Millers striker Matt Derbyshire inadvertently turned Leeds defender in the 35th minute when his head got in the way of Danny Ward’s goalbound piledriver.

Four minutes earlier midfielder Kari Arnason had produced a superb tackle to deny Charlie Taylor inside the penalty as the Leeds man shaped to shoot with the goal gaping.

Rotherham’s other good chance had come in the 24th minute when Daniel Lafferty got on the end of Lee Frecklington’s cross only to direct his header over.

Evans ditched the holiday outfit in which he had arrived and sported regulation club blazer and grey trousers throughout the match.
