Rampant Barnsley cruised into the FA Cup second round after dismantling League Two high-fliers Burton Albion in clinical fashion.

Sam Winnall was undoubtedly the star performer for Reds boss Danny Wilson as he bagged a super hat-trick as the Brewers were put to the sword.

The Reds had been two to the good at the interval courtesy of Winnall’s well-taken brace.

The visitors carved out the first chance after the restart. Robbie Weir found half-time substitute Dominic Knowles, but he fired a left-foot shot disappointingly wide.

The hosts responded with Conor Hourihane stinging the palms of Brewers’ ‘keeper Dean Lyness, before the ex-Plymouth ace made no mistake as he made it 3-0 in the 56th minute.

Hourihane easily slotted past Lyness from eight yards after he found himself on the end of Martin Cranie’s right-wing cross.

The Reds were now strolling to a comfortable victory and Luke Berry almost made it 4-0 in the 65th minute when his cute chip only just cleared the Burton crossbar.

Winnall did make it 4-0 in the 73rd minute as he completed his superb treble. Hourihane’s corner-kick wasn’t cleared, leaving Winnall to tuck home easily after an initial side-footed strike had rebounded back to him off the base of a post.

It was 5-0 with eight minutes to go when Devante Cole guided a low shot past Lyness after being teed up by fellow substitute Leroy Lita.
