Remi Matthews says he would never have known Doncaster Rovers were battling for survival in League One had he not been told before his loan move.

The on-loan Norwich City goalkeeper revealed his surprise that Rovers are struggling at the wrong end of the table given the quality of players and staff at the club.

And he insists he is convinced they will secure survival this season, despite the odds being against them.

“If I was to come into this club and not know where they are in the league, I wouldn’t expect them to be down there,” he told The Star.

“With the players we’ve got, the manager we’ve got, I’m really surprised.

“Team spirit is high here and training is really sharp.

“But that’s how it is at the minute and we’ve got to do our best to get out of it.

“I’m not going to say ‘if we get relegated’ because I don’t think we will.”

Matthews has endured a baptism of fire since arriving at the Keepmoat last week, conceding four goals in the devastating defeat at Colchester United before the heartbreak of the late loss to Blackpool on Monday.

Rovers head to Rochdale tomorrow looking to reduce their four point gap to safety and the 22-year-old believes there will be a little less pressure on them this weekend.

He said: “When you’re playing the Colchesters and Blackpools, that’s when you can’t lose those games.

“That maybe affected us a bit. You shouldn’t got in with a different mindset but when you’re playing the bigger teams, that’s when you think ‘we’ve got nothing to lose.’

“We need to go out, give it all and show what we can do.

“We’ve got seven games to go and we’ve got to keep battling.”

Rovers boss Darren Ferguson revealed midfielder Paul Keegan could miss the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring tear.

Keegan will miss at least the next four weeks and is a major doubt for the rest of the game.

Defender Gary MacKenzie is doubtful for tomorrow’s trip to Rochdale due to a groin problem.
