Parkgate eye top spot

PROMOTION chasing Parkgate will look to start 2012 as they ended the last year when they visit NCEL Premier Division leaders Retford United on Monday.

Parkgate stretched their winning run in the league to five matches with a Boxing Day 2-0 win over local rivals Maltby.

And they will hope to cut the seven point gap between themselves and top spot at Retford, giving themselves plenty of room to manoeuvre with three games in hand.

Parkgate pressured from the start against Maltby but were met with a resilient defence.

Nathan Forbes-Swindells drilled into the wall from an early free kick while Adam Shepherd’s first time effort flew wide after Danny Barlow ghosted past four Maltby defenders.

Gary Middleton made a fine blocking tackle to deny former Maltby man Chris Wood space after being played in by Ashley Worsfold.

But the breakthrough came ten minutes from the break as Liam Davies crossed and Wood rose bravely to beat Maltby keeper Scott Thompson to the ball and head home his 30th goal since switching from Muglet Lane in March.

Maltby enjoyed their best spell just after the break with ex-Steelman Daniel McKenzie denied by the assured Jamie Bailey.

The game was effectively sealed on 58 minutes when Davies popped up to meet Worsfold’s over-hit cross and send a cracking volley past Thompson.
