Owls: Wickham relishing Lita link-up

Sheffield Wednesday v Derby County........Connor Wickham

CONNOR Wickham is set for a full debut for the Owls at Birmingham tomorrow - eager to develop his strike partnership with Leroy Lita, writes Paul Thompson

The loan duo teamed up after Wickham played as a sub in the last game, the 2-2 draw with Derby, and he feels that they can work well together.

“I’ve played against Leroy a few times and always thought he’s a good player,” said the 19-year-old. “I’ve also always thought that maybe he was an under-rated player, so it was good to get the chance to go on and played alongside him. I thought we showed some good link-up play.”

Wickham also feels that he and Lita complement each other and provide variety: “We weren’t making the same runs. Hopefully we can be a good pairing.”

Ex-Ipswich star Wickham also knows that much may be expected of him in his month on loan from Sunderland.

He has for two years been known as the teenager who cost a whopping £8m. But he insists that this has not been a burden to him as he has strived to establish himself at the Stadium of Light.

“It’s not my fault I went for that amount of money,” he says. “It was what the clubs agreeed. For me, it’s about what I do on the pitch; what happens off it is not down to me.”

Wickham is confident that the Owls, who will overtake Birmingham if they win, can climb the Championship table.

“It’s so tight. Anyone can beat anyone in this league. A few points can take you up several places.

“I think it’s a good challenge that all the boys are looking forward to, especially me.”

Wickham’s arrival has increased speculation about a loan move for Gary Madine - who was the subject of an inquiry from Doncaster last week.

Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore has confirmed he was interested er but could not afford him. Moore did, however, strengthen an injury-hit midfield by borrowing Paul Corry from the Owls for a month.
