Doncaster Rovers Belles 0 Birmingham City 2

BELLES’ final home game of the season turned into something of a damp squib as a classy Birmingham side strolled to victory.

In persistent pouring rain, Belles struggled to get any sort of grip on the game and succumbed to goals from England striker Eni Aluko and Jade Moore.

John Buckley’s team went into the Sunday evening clash in good spirits on the back of an impressive three game unbeaten run.

But the title chasing Blues, who had to win to stay in with a chance of overturning league leaders Arsenal, were in a different class for the majority of the evening.

While Doncaster surrendered possession too easily, the visitors appeared calm and composed on the ball.

Izzy Christianson had already been denied by a save from point blank range by Mary Earps and then cannoned a shot off the bar before Eluko struck in decisive fashion.

The England international latched onto Jodie Taylor’s through ball and rifled a shot in off the underside of the bar.

Belles were still in the game at 0-1 but a second goal shortly after the restart left them with a mountain to climb.

Moore it was who claimed the final touch after a wicked cross from the left by Kerys Harrop.

Belles were restricted to long range efforts all night.

They face another stiff examination at Arsenal on Sunday, a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN (4.30pm).
