THERE were just three scheduled Gainsborough and District Football League fixtures on Saturday but all three games produced very close results which were very much in doubt right up to the final whistle.
BFC Birches might have expected an easier game than they had away at East Drayton. The home team gave so much to a game that swung one way then the other before BFC Birches just took the points after a 5-4 win.
The result was very hard on East Drayton who contributed such a lot to the game but BFC Birches refused to be denied the points, enabling them to stay on the heels of leaders Mattersey FC who were without a game this weekend.
Retford Town went a goal down in the first half at home to Harworth Colliery in a game where the strong wind played a significant part.
With the wind behind them in the second half Retford Town laid siege to the Harworth goal but a mixture of good defending and missed opportunities saw the visitors hang on to their single goal advantage and claim all three points.
Bridon AFC and Fox and Hounds finished their game all square at 2-2 with Bridon equalising with almost the last kick of the match.
Fox and Hounds were not happy at the amount of added time at the end of the game but the moral is play until the final whistle.
But they should take heart from this result after a run of defeats was finally stopped, hopefully giving the team the confidence they need for the rest of the season.
Results for Saturday 26th November: East Drayton 4, BFC Birches 5; Bridon AFC 2, Fox and Hounds 2; Retford Town 0, Harworth Colliery 1.
Fixtures for Saturday 3rd December: Fox and Hounds Willingham v Gainsborough Town Canute Reserves; Harworth Colliery v Mattersey FC; Haxey FC v East Drayton. Nottinghamshire County Junior Cup Round Three - BFC Birches v Ruddington Village; Bridon AFC v Selston.

The game of the day in the Gainsborough and District Sunday Football League Premier League saw the unbeaten FS Clumber play away at the also undefeated Real Ropery.
FS Clumber felt that their defending had let them down last weekend in the Nottinghamshire County Senior Cup and they were in no mood to repeat such defending this week.
Real Ropery certainly enjoyed a fair share of possession in the game but, despite several near misses, they only managed a single goal, and it was FS Clumber who took the points after a 2-1 victory which takes them to the top of the table.
Kings Arms did their cause no harm after a 5-1 away win at the luckless Rose and Crown who made them quite hard for the spoils.
Just one game was played in Division One and Maltings FC took the opportunity to move level on points with Harworth Pavilion at the head of the table after a 4-1 win at Kings Arms Reserves. This division is the closest of all four with only three points separating six teams.
In Division Two the top two, White Horse FC and Moorends Social Club, have opened up a 10-point advantage. White Horse were without a game this week and Moorends took advantage to close the gap to a single point after a resounding 6-1 win against Horse and Jockey.
Ingleby Arms and Epworth FC could not be separated after a tight 1-1 draw at Marton, and both teams were worthy of the point they gained.
In Division Three Peacock Veterans remain unbeaten after a dour 0-0 result against Jack and Jill, the game being largely spoilt by the strong wind, while Brickmakers Arms recorded a much needed victory after their recent difficulties and the 2-0 win over Vine Inn FC was just their second of the season.
In the Nottinghamshire Junior Cup East Markham played very well to win 4-1 away at Dovecrest FC, but Leverton United were unable to join them despite dominating a large part of their game against ABP and just a single goal was enough to give the Nottingham team victory. Leverton were so much on top in the second half but a great goalkeeping display by the visiting keeper proved to be decisive.
The league will still have five representatives in round four of the Nottinghamshire Minor Cup after a very good morning for local teams.
There was one all-Gainsborough League tie at Walkeringham where visitors BFC Birches finally wore down the home team’s resistance to record a 4-2 victory. North Wheatley Phoenix completely overran their opponents Heathhill, also from Nottingham, 6-0 and dominated the game from first kick to last, the highlight being five goals from Darrel Hewitt.
Harworth Pavilion gave the free scoring Newark Flowserve a lesson in both finishing and defending, winning 7-1. This was a very dominant performance from Harworth who have gone from strength to strength this season.
A remarkable game at Priory Celtic, who had knocked out Clumber EFC in a previous round, saw Vine Inn Athletic take a two-goal lead with only 10 minutes left in the game only to have their opponents take the game into extra time with two late goals.
Vine Inn Athletic took the lead again in extra time but were pegged back once again and the tie went into a penalty shoot-out. It was Vine Inn Athletic who held their nerve the better to claim a place in the next round with a four penalties to two victory.
Mattersey were never under any real pressure in their game against Sparta FC and a 3-0 victory hardly reflects just how dominant they were.
King and Miller did not get kicked-off in their game until almost noon against their opponents Beeston Athletic who to say the least were very late. The game finished at almost 2pm after it went to extra time and it was Beeston Athletic who went into the next round after a 5-3 victory. King and Miller feel somewhat aggrieved after they had to move pitches because of the Beeston Athletic late arrival as another team was booked on their allotted ground at noon.
