Home comforts at last in a welcome win for ‘Gate

Parkgate earned their first home league win of the season, after a sparkling performance against Basford United last weekend.

Parkgate, who prevailed 3-1, were 2-0 up at half time thanks to goals from Andy Dawson and George Morley.

Ben Langford’s second half header put the Blues 3-0 up, and only Fabian Smith’s stoppage-time consolation took any gloss off a sterling performance from Parkgate.

Parkgate were off to a flier after just 12 minutes, when Dawson’s shot - from all of 40 yards - hit goalkeeper Alexandra Bartarini’s forearm and went into the net.

Five minutes later, Ashley Linacare broke and lobbed the United keeper - but fortunately for the visitors, Smith cleared to safety.

Two minutes later, George Morley forced a fine save from the goalkeeper with an 18-yard volley.

Richard Watson squandered a good chance to add a second, but soon after it was 2-0 when Morley obtained the ball in midfielder and ended a fine run with a composed finish.

Parkgate went further ahead within five minutes of the restart, when Langford rose highest at the back post to head home a fine cross from Simon Mirfin. Bartarini was given no chance to save.

Parkgate remained in total command of the game, and should have added a fourth when two strikers went for the same cross.

Soon after, Tom Foltyn-Brown’s effort went just wide from another Linacre cross.

United went close to pulling one back with nine minutes to go, when a crossed rebounded off the Parkgate crossbar, and Ryan Whitehurst also squandered a good opportunity to pull a goal back.

But they did manage a consolation goal a minute into stoppage time, when Smith pounced from close range.

On Saturday, Parkgate are away at Lincoln Moorlands Railway (3pm).
