SPANISH GETAWAY: Simon Gillett has joined Portsmouth on their pre-season tour of Spain.

Former Rovers midfielder Simon Gillett has travelled with potential new club Portsmouth on a pre-season tour of Spain.

Dean Saunders revealed last week that Portsmouth were the club to have offered Gillett terms with which Rovers could not compete.

And it appears Gillett – who started his career with Pompey’s fierce rivals Southampton – is close to sealing a move to Fratton Park after agreeing to take part in the trip.

Portsmouth are unable to sign players at the present time due to the transfer embargo placed upon them while they remain in administration.

But Michael Appleton is lining up players ready for when he is given the green light to make signings.

Gillett has been joined on the trip by a familiar face as former Rovers defender Mustapha Dumbuya continues his own trial with Pompey.

Saunders himself was keen to offer both players new deals but has his hands tied by financial restraints at the Keepmoat.

Another player on Portsmouth’s tour – which includes games against Gibraltar and Brighton – is Brian Howard.

Saunders confirmed Howard’s agent has been in touch with Rovers this summer to declare his client’s availability.

Lloyd Sam, Izale Mcleod, Jon Harley, Simon Eastwood and Luke Rodgers are other free agents to have linked up with Appleton’s squad on trial.

All seven senior players who remain on Portsmouth’s books from last season have not travelled to Spain as they await transfers away from the cash-strapped club.

Last week the Football League confirmed Pompey will start next season on minus ten points.
