Rotherham beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 in their pre-season friendly at New York Stadium, with last season’s goalscoring hero Kieran Agard picking up where he left off by scoring the game’s only goal.

Big-spending Forest are an established side in the second tier, while the Millers, after successive promotions, are experiencing that elite level for the first time under manager Steve Evans when the league action commences for real on August 9.

It’sa warm evening in Rotherham, with substitutions sure to play a factor as the action unfolded.

And the heat perhaps did play its part in a laid back first half, which, as you would expect from a pre-season friendly, was played at a pretty low tempo.

Millers did have the better of the few chances but a draw was fair at the break.

After a raft of substitutions for the second half, Millers looked even more comfortable and in the 65th minute they took the lead.

Ben Pringle’s inch perfect through ball went straight into the path of Kieran Agard and the striker slipped the ball past the Forest keeper.

The game opened up after that with chances at either end but Forest were unlucky not to have snatched a draw with a couple of minutes to go when Lars Veldwijk’s header struck the post.

That was the second time the woodwork had come to Millers rescue as before that Stephen McLaughlin had rocked the crossbar with Adam Collin well beaten.

Millers held on after that late flurry from Forest and registered a confidence-boosting and well-earned victory.
