Rovers held on despite a brilliant second half rally from Chesterfield to secure a first home win in six months.

In a thrilling rollercoaster ride, Rovers twice saw two-goal cushions eroded as the Spireites threatened a similar comeback to their midweek heroics at Preston.

Goals from Nathan Tyson, Kyle Bennett and Jamie McCombe saw Rovers pick up their first win at the Keepmoat since beating Sheffield Wednesday in March.

Sam Clucas and Eoin Doyle netted for Chesterfield to set up a tense finish but Rovers held their nerve.

Tyson got his side off the mark just six minutes in.

Reece Wabara produced a fine cross from the right to pick out Tyson, who saw his initial header saved by Lee but lashed home the rebound.

There was a brief moment of confusion as the assistant flagged for a foul only for referee Tony Harrington to award the goal.

And then Bennett struck a well-weighted Richie Wellens cut back first time off the underside of the bar to give Tommy Lee no chance on 32 minutes and give his side a well-deserved cushion.

Signs of a Spireites fightback in the manner of Tuesday night’s thrilling draw at Preston were scarce until they pulled a goal back on 42 minutes.

Clucas reacted first after a Daniel Johnson effort came back off the post and he turned home into an empty net with Rovers appealing for offside.

And a comeback looked even less likely when McCombe restored the advantage with the second half in it’s infancy.

The towering centre-half reacted well to poke home on 49 minutes after James Coppinger’s header from a Bennett corner was parried by Tommy Lee.

Eoin Doyle grabbed his eighth goal in four games to give Chesterfield a lifeline.

The on-song striker was well-placed to poke home from close range after Jed Steer had saved for Rovers.

Ian Evatt hit a Johnson corner on goal first time only for Steer to block with his legs.

And Johnson had a golden opportunity to level up on 75 minutes when worked space for a shot from ten yards and pulled his effort wide.

Chesterfield’s ran out of steam late in the game, allowing Rovers to hold on for the win.
