A goal in each half proved enough as third-placed AFC Flyde registered a comfortable 2-0 victory over Frickley Athletic.

Frickley, who gave Joe Kenny a start on the left of midfield with loan signing McCauley Shillito on the bench, threatened early on when Luke Hinsley went close, but they fell behind on 23 minutes when Luke Denson curled a spectacular free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Denson had the chance ti double his tally just before half time, but this time his effort was lower and Tom Woodhead managed to parry.

The resulting rebound was turned home, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Danny Lloyd fired an angled shot straight at Woodhead shortly after half time as Fylde resumed on the offensive.

But, on 51 minutes, the Blues should have drawn level. Matty Bloor’s chipped cross fell to Jimmy Ghaichem at the back post and he was all on his own six yards out. But somehow, he managed to poke the ball wide of the far post when it looked easier to score.

And the Blues were made to pay for their profligacy just before the hour mark, when Flyde doubled their lead. Matt Hughes was the scorer, rising highest to head home at the back post from a deep corner.

Hinsley fired an angled shot straight at Hinchliffe shortly afterwards, but it was soon Wodhead’s turn to be back in the action as he denied both Bradley Barnes and Lloyd in quick succession.
