A Balby footballer is about to switch South Yorkshire for the States.

Teenager Lyndon Thompson, who plays for Doncaster Senior League Premier Division side Yorkshire Main, will be heading to the USA next month after scoring a football scholarship following a successful trial.

The 18-year-old Sir Thomas Wharton College pupil will be joining Oklahoma’s Southwestern Christian University and will play for the Eagles soccer team.

The former Warmsworth Lions midfielder will be combining his university studies with his football training for the next four years.

The opportunity came through the PASS4Soccer project which offers football trials and scholarships.

A PASS4Soccer spokesman said: “Lyndon’s achievement in winning such a high value scholarship and placement is in recognition of both his academic achievements to date and his athletic ability.

“Lyndon will have access to excellent facilities while also having the opportunity to play in front of crowds of fans.”

Places in the PASS4Soccer Network are now available for the August 2015 and 2016 scholarships. Trials will be held in Stockport this month, London in August, and Birminghan and Newcastle in September.
