World Cup referee Howard Webb dropped by to officiate a school football tournament just days before flying out to Brazil’s global event.
The SportFX South Yorkshire football festival saw Rotherham referee Webb, and project ambassador, offer his expertise to help the running of the tournament which was themed around the World Cup.
The project, run by SportFX South Yorkshire, has been offering young people free football lessons in school.
Mexborough Comprehensive are due to have the project set-up in school, with courses running from September.
Webb, who saw Dinnington Comprehensive clinch the latest tournament and is currently in Brazil for the World Cup 2014 which begins today, said: “The weather wasn’t brilliant, but there were no complaints from these guys who just wanted to play football.
“This event is our way of saying thank you to the boys and girls who have attended the football coaching sessions each week.
“I personally would like to thank all the kids and our partner agencies. Without their continued support, we (SportFX South Yorkshire) would not be able to engage with so many young people.”
Maplins donated £1,500 towards the event. Further prizes came from Co-operative and Costco.
