Double winners Denaby Main finished their first league season last Saturday with a 5-2 win over Rovers Foundation.

That win means they have completed their debut campaign without losing a single league game.

If that record wasn’t impressive enough, they added the Division One KO Cup for good measure, too.

“We set up the team to get Saturday football back to Tickhill Square,” Denaby’s Andrew Nota said.

“We needed to help our club’s juniors, and give them somewhere to play when they’re too old for the Under-16s.

“We didn’t know it would end up like this. We’ve done a lot better than we ever could have expected.

“But the hard work starts now - we’re moving up a level, and a lot of clubs are competing for the same players.”

Eight of the squad which started the season are still part of the team, and Andrew reckons the squad can call upon a roster of around 20 players for games.

“It probably helps that we’re winning games,” he smiles.

“If we were getting tanked 6-0 every week, it might be a bit more difficult!

“But the spirit the boys have is amazing. We were 3-1 down at half time to Hemsworth, who finished second. But we battled back to draw 3-3.”

On Saturday, goals from Liam Winfield, top scorer Ryan Oakley, Ainsley Finney, Chris Hancock and Gary Adcock sealed a 5-2 victory over Rovers Foundation.

“At times, that game produced the best football I’ve seen all year,” Andrew added.

“Rovers’ midfielders were excellent, as were ours.”
