‘Ell’ of a strike helps United beat Shafton

A goal of the season contender from two-goal striker Steve Ellor helped Denaby United to a 2-1 victory over Shafton Villa.

Ellor netted the wonder-strike with 20 minutes of the game remaining, when he ran on to Callum Beck’s through-ball and volleyed home from 25 yards.

Home goalkeeper Martin Whitely could only watch as the ball sailed over his head and nestled in the top corner.

“He reckons it’s the best he’s ever scored,” Denaby’s secretary Steve Pugh said,

“I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was better than Matty Lowton’s for Astoon Villa on Saturday.”

Ellor had earlier sidefooted his side into the lead for his 28th goal in nine league games, set up by Paul Hemmingway.

Jordan Dever, drafted in an hour before kick-off, came to United’s rescue when, after Andy Lowe had hit the post with a free-kick, he diverted Lee Bennett’s follow-up shot onto the other post.

But he was eventually beaten ten minutes before the end when Villa’s Adam Fretwell shot through a crowd of bodies and into the net.

Shafton couldn’t mount a comeback, however, despite hitting the post twice more. The two sides meet again, at Old Road on Saturday.
