RYAN ON THE RECORD
WE are back home at long last this weekend after three hard games on the road produced a narrow defeat, a victory and a draw.
With a game in hand we sit just a point off the play-off zone and I am hoping that the fans will come out in their numbers.
At Bramall Lane on Tuesday night I witnessed one of the best rearguard actions from a Rovers side in a long time, particularly in the second half.
In fact if we had scored in the opening 90 seconds when the United goal led a charmed life, I reckon we would have sneaked that game with a 1-0 scoreline.
We must have the two biggest centre backs in League One in Rob Jones and Jamie McCombe and it really makes us defensively solid.
Add to those two fellow six-footers Paul Quinn and Tommy Spurr and we probably have the tallest, strongest and most talented back four in the division.
Compared to recent seasons, if we did not have those boys in there I reckon we would have capitulated against the Blades.
You only have to look at the top end of the Championship and Premier League to see that managers go for height and strength at the back and this formation can really lay the platform for us to launch a major challenge for a place back in the Championship.
The visit of Stevenage should be a very entertaining game and hopefully we can get three points ahead of the away trip to Leyton Orient.
It’s not just a case of keeping in touch with the leaders, it is a case of dominating the leading pack and letting them worry about you.
I really feel Dean is building a solid squad here who really want to play for him and Brian Carey.
The team spirit is clearly evident and the players are really wanting to play for the club and for the supporters, who were once again brilliant at Colchester and Sheffield.
I am delighted to see them go across with their manager and applaud the supporters following the final whistle.
We have an interesting and long trip to Norwich on Wednesday night when our big back four will come up against Grant Holt who, as we go to print, is yet to get off the mark this term.
Kyle Bennett should also get the opportunity to showcase his skills against his brother Elliott.
It will be an interesting exercise for our defenders and we have a good track record against the Canaries.
Finally, it’s really pleasing for my colleagues and I to see the progress young James Husband is making.
What a turn of pace he showed at Bramall Lane and he would surely have headed into the box had he not been taken out.
