Flynn to fly back to Doncaster Rovers

BACK ON BOARD: Former Rovers skipper Brian Flynn in back in Doncaster to lead the club's recruitment strategy.

FORMER Wales assistant boss Brian Flynn is close to finalising an agreement over a return to Doncaster Rovers, the Free Press understands.

It is expected Flynn – who made 51 appearances for Rovers during two spells between 1985 and 1988 – will carry out scouting for the club rather than filling the director of football role vacated by Mickey Walker earlier this month.

Flynn left his role as Wales Under 21 boss earlier this year after eight years in the job which saw a caretaker stint in charge of the senior side between John Toshack and Gary Speed’s appointments.

He is widely credited for the rapid rises of the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey into the Wales senior side, two players he touted for future caps well before they made the first team of their club sides.

There was a sense of shock in the principality when Flynn’s contract with the Welsh FA was ended in April.

The 56-year-old worked alongside current Rovers boss Dean Saunders in the Wales set up for three years.

Saunders is reportedly keen to exploit Flynn’s vast knowledge of players built during his time with Wales.

Flynn was an interested spectator of Rovers’ first pre-season friendly at Cleethorpes Town last weekend.

A former Burnley, Leeds United and Cardiff City midfielder, Flynn began his coaching career in 1989 as player-manager of Wrexham where he stayed for 12 years.

He then bossed Swansea City before joining the national team set-up.
