Doncaster Rovers keen on Nicky Weaver

DONCASTER Rovers boss Dean Saunders remains keen on bringing Sheffield Wednesday keeper Nicky Weaver to the club, but he played down comments by Owls’ boss Dave Jones that it was a ‘done deal’ yesterday afternoon.
“I’ve spoken to Dave Jones about Weaver but there is still a lot of work to be done” said Saunders, who seemed surprised to learn of the Wednesday manager’s comments.
One of the reasons for the delay in Weaver joining former team-mates Rob Jones and Tommy Spurr at the League One club is thought to be financial.
Saunders admitted that he wasn’t in a position to offer trialist striker Karl Hawley a deal because he had spent the little money he had available on signing midfielder James Harper on Friday.
Saunders, who was only able to field five substitutes in Saturday’s opening League One game at Walsall, makes no secret of the fact that he’d like to bring in several players.
He is also known to want to bring in another right-back, striker and possibly another midfielder.
“If we were to pick up three or four injuries or suspensions we’d be in big trouble,” said the Doncaster boss.
Much will depend on whether another of his big earners leaves the club before the transfer deadline. Saunders had expected that winger James Coppinger would move on before the Walsall game after Hull City boss Steve Bruce expressed an interest. But he said yesterday that there had been no further interest. “It’s gone cold at the moment,” said Saunders.
Saunders hopes to have midfielder Paul Keegan, who missed the Walsall game with a hip problem, available for tonight’s game against Bury.
The Irishman did some extra work with fitness coach Mal Purchase after yesterday’s training session and will have a fitness test today.
But Keegan could have to settle for a place on the bench with Saunders likely to be reluctant to change a winning side even though he is expected to send his charges out with a different game-plan to Saturday.
“A lot of teams will come here and just sit back and we’ve got to be able to find a different way around them if they do that,” he said.
Saunders had Bury watched in their 0-0 draw against visiting Brentford and he also watched footage of the game over the weekend.
“They are a hard-working side and we might have to play a different style of game to Saturday,” he said.
