ROVERS have made an approach to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine on loan, the Star understands.

Brian Flynn will dip into the loan market to ease his growing injury worry after striker Chris Brown was ruled out for up to two months with knee ligament damage.

The Welshman confirmed he is hoping to hear by teatime today whether his enquiries have been successful.

He hopes to bring in two players before Monday’s tough trip to Crawley Town, most likely on one month deals.

And the Star understands 22-year-old Owls forward Madine is one of Flynn’s top targets.

Wednesday boss Dave Jones last week said Madine would not be leaving the club and would be fighting for his place after speculation he was set for a loan move.

But the situation may have altered after Jones signed Sunderland’s Connor Wickham on a month-long deal.

Madine – previously a rumoured target for Swindon, Coventry and Millwall – has fallen down the pecking order at Hillsborough this season, starting just 13 games and netting three goals.

Wickham and Leroy Lita have both joined on loan recently while Jones previously favoured winger Michail Antonio in a striker’s role.

Flynn would not reveal the identity of his targets for Rovers.

A central midfielder is likely to be on his wanted list due to injuries for David Syers, Paul Keegan and Andy Griffin, who acted as a makeshift midfielder against MK Dons on Tuesday night.

He did confirm he has made requests to several Premier League clubs for players.

Flynn said: “We’re awaiting return calls from a number of managers in regards to requests I’ve made.

“We’re in a wait-and-see situation.

“Because we’re without Browny, Iain Hume and Dave Syers, a forward is the number one area I’m looking at.

“I’d like to have two new players in by Crawley.

“That would be if we have the worst scenario of Syers and Hume not being ready for Crawley.

“If those two are still out I’d like to bring two in.

“Anyone coming in would be a reinforcement for what we’re trying to do.

“It would likely only be for a month.”
