DONCASTER ROVERS: Dean Saunders warns of backlash

DONCASTER Rovers boss Dean Saunders warns that his charges could face a backlash from Carlisle United’s 4-1 home defeat against Leyton Orient in tonight’s League One clash against the Cumbrians at Brunton Park.
“Apparently the Carlisle manager has accused his players of being too nice or something as did the Portsmouth manager before we played them on Saturday, so I’m expecting a bit of a reaction,” said Saunders.
But with Rovers being unbeaten on their last seven league trips, five of which they have won, Saunders isn’t unduly worried about the trip to Cumbria.
“They’ve obviously conceded a lot of goals and they’ve lost a lot at home, but I’m more concerned about us,” he said.
“It was another solid performance away from home and we’ve just got to keep building on such performances. I want to make sure that we get better at what we are doing. We’ve got a plan that we work to and everyone is working very hard.
“But I’d like us to have longer spells of creative football and put games to bed earlier rather than going into the last 15 minutes only one goal to the good.”
Saunders was playing his cards close to his chest over his starting line-up.
But with Kyle Bennett (knee) and Sammy Clingan (calf) again sidelined, he could well decide to name an unchanged side.
Centre-back Jamie McCombe has started light training again after being given the all-clear following a scan on Friday.
“He’s been doing a bit of running and hopefully he’ll be able to join in with the rest of the group later this week, but Saturday’s home game against Scunthorpe will be a bit too early for him, said Saunders,
“You can’t do a lot when you have a hairline fracture of the spine. It is just a case of trying to get his fitness and his sharpness back.”
Looking ahead to tonight’s game, United boss Greg Abbott said: “We have to stand up and be counted because we know we’re better than Saturday’s 4-1 defeat. We’ve been through a tough time but we just need to be patient and keep doing what we believe in.”
