DONCASTER ROVERS: Dean Saunders waits for Martin Woods

DONCASTER Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders will be checking on midfielder Martin Woods today ahead of Wednesday’s Capital One Cup third round tie against Premier League outfit Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The former Scottish Under-21 international needed treatment for a knee injury, after being tackled from behind in the second half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with high-flying Stevenage at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Woods resumed after treatment before being replaced by striker Iain Hume. He left the stadium after the game limping and with his knee bandaged.

“He twisted his knee a little bit but I think he’s all right,” said the Doncaster boss.

The Welshman was only able to name six substitutes and his back-up options against the Canaries would be further depleted were Woods to be ruled out.

Reflecting on the game, Saunders told The Star: “They are another team like Crawley. They have a formula and they all know what they are doing and they all know what they need to do to win.

“They also know what to do not to lose. We had a disallowed goal and we had two great chances to win the game late on - Rob Jones and Chris Brown - and had we done so it would have been a great result because they are second in the league and they are a good side.

“I don’t think it would have been unfair on them had we won it at the death. We dominated the game for long periods. I know we didn’t always play well, but they didn’t either.”

Trailing 1-0 a the break, Saunders replaced defensive midfielder Paul Keegan with James Harper at the start of the second half.

“James Harper made a big difference,” said Saunders. “James Husband showed some energy and youthful enthusiasm when he came on and he won us the free-kick from which we equalised.

“Iain Hume also did well when he came on. He looked lively and he looks as though he knows what he is doing.

“The secret of football is anticipation. Some players can see what is going to happen and others can’t, but he can.”
