Doncaster Rovers: Brian Flynn is a ‘safe pair of hands’

FORMER Doncaster Rovers manager Dean Saunders says Brian Flynn is a “safe pair of hands” and is backing the Welshman to lead the club back into the Championship at the first attempt.
After an eight-year absence, Flynn celebrated his return to club management in fine style as Rovers cruised to a 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient to stay level on points with Tranmere Rovers at the top of the League One table.
Saunders, who left Rovers earlier this month to become Wolves new boss, told The Star: “It is good news Brian has been appointed. He knows what he is doing. He was a big part of what I was trying to do and was a huge help in our recruitment drive.
“He is a safe pair of hands and I wouldn’t have brought him into the football club if he was an idiot.
“Brian brings experience and doing the right thing at the right time. They got a great result against Orient and hopefully he can keep them up there and get them promoted.
“They have had a great start. He has got Rob (Jones) with him and he knows what we were doing in training. He knows what works and doesn’t.”
Saunders has overseen two draws with Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday. Wolves looked devoid of creativity in the final third at Hillsborough and Saunders has been linked with moves for players he left behind at the Keepmoat Stadium, including Rovers top-scorer David Cotterill. But Saunders, who was in charge of Rovers for almost 18 months, insists he has no intention of raiding his old club.
“I have already got five right wingers at the club so I am alright in that position,” he said. “I have walked into the job at Wolves with a squad of forty players. The Wolves chairman has asked me to reduce the wage bill and lose some players.
“I will be shedding players rather than signing them. I would not like to take any players off Doncaster. I want to see them do well.
“The first thing I asked when I came off against Wednesday was, how did they get on?”
Meanwhile, winger James Baxendale, released by Rovers in the summer, has put pen to paper on a new 18-month contract with Walsall. The 20-year-old, has impressed for the Saddlers this term, making 23 appearances, hitting three goals.
Baxendale said: “I am really enjoying my time here.”
