BRIAN Stock could be set to complete a move to Burnley before the end of the week, the Free Press understands.

The Clarets have long been linked with a move for the influential midfielder but look set to show their hand for the first time.

Rovers boss Dean Saunders earlier this week insisted there had been no contact made from Turf Moor regarding Stock.

But sources suggest Stock has been offered a deal by Burnley and the move could be wrapped up before the weekend.

It is unclear whether a nominal fee would be involved in the deal or if Rovers would be happy to let Stock leave on a free to open up much-needed funds with his wages.

The 30-year-old was part of Rovers’ second half side in the 3-2 friendly win at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night.

And he did his chances of making a move no harm as he dictated the pace of the game with near flawless passing from the centre of the park – something he also did in the 4-2 win at Cleethorpes Town last weekend.

Stock has a year left on his deal with Rovers after penning a two and a half year contract last February.

Burnley boss Eddie Howe has made no secret of his interest in Stock, who he played alongside at Bournemouth.

The Clarets were linked with a move for the former Wales international in January and Howe has maintained his admiration.

Burnley missed out on midfielder Adam Clayton who chose to depart Leeds United for Huddersfield Town earlier this month.

And is seems Stock remains on Howe’s list of players who could fill the central midfield berth.

Should Stock depart this week, it will ease the frustration of Saunders as he attempts to shape his squad for the new season.

Such is the threadbare nature of the Rovers squad that both Saunders and assistant Brian Carey were forced to play part of the game with Cleethorpes while young central midfielder Jake McCormick has been deployed as an emergency right back.

Freeing up Stock’s wages will likely allow Saunders to bring in at least two players.

But he admitted that due to being unable to offer deals, he has missed out on more than a dozen players so far.
