BRIAN Flynn has been named the new permanent manager of Doncaster Rovers.

The 57-year-old succeeds Dean Saunders who brought him to the club as a scout earlier this season.

Flynn initially took the role on a caretaker basis alongside Rovers skipper Rob Jones who will become player-coach as part of the new regime.

The Rovers hierarchy were expected to meet today to finalise a shortlist of candidates following the sifting through of applications on Tuesday.

But Flynn and Jones emerged as the preferred candidates during Tuesday’s discussions and were offered the job at lunchtime today.

Flynn was captain of Rovers during a year long spell at the club in the late 80s.

He left Belle Vue in 1988 for Wrexham where he began his managerial career.

Flynn also bossed Swansea City before taking charge of Wales U21s, beginning an eight year stint with the national team which saw him take charge of the senior squad as caretaker in 2010.
