Doncaster Rovers: Sky Blues seeking some home comfort

Grounds for optimism? Coventry will remain at the Ricoh Arena for the rest of the season.
Grounds for optimism? Coventry will remain at the Ricoh Arena for the rest of the season.

WHAT a mess. There is no other way to describe recent events at Coventry City.

And regardless of any football rhetoric that might come from the vague direction of the Ricoh Arena - or wherever the Sky Blues happen to be based these days - it is bound to have had an effect on Steven Pressley and his squad.

Coventry go into today’s game with their potential play-off push whipped from under their feet after a High Court ruling this week deemed that the football club - and not a subsidiary company - were in administration.

With a ten-point deduction ratified by the Football League yesterday, a short-term agreement reached yesterday with landlords Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) allowing City to see out the season at the Ricoh provided barely a crumb of comfort for a club in crisis.

Coventry’s season is effectively over. The club’s long-term future is also far from secure.

When the whistle blows at 3pm today, City’s players might be focused on the game, relieved somewhat to be doing their talking on the pitch.

But their preparation, and mental state of mind, will be no match for a Doncaster squad buoyed by victory at Scunthorpe and hoping to take another giant step towards promotion back to the Championship.

And a statement from Coventry City Football Club Holdings Ltd, released yesterday, touched upon the uncertainty currently surrounding the club.

“Coventry City Football Club Holdings Ltd are pleased that an agreement has been reached with ACL and the Administrator that enables us to play our last three remaining home matches at the Ricoh Arena,” it read.

“We apologise profusely to our fans about the confusion surrounding these fixtures and are delighted that this has now been resolved.

“We can now look forward to playing current league leaders Doncaster in the hope of doing the double over them.

“Moving forward we hope that we can continue a constructive dialogue with ACL with the aim of securing a sustainable future for the club at the Ricoh Arena.”
