Doncaster Rovers: One play-off place left up for grabs, says Richie Wellens

Richie Wellens and his Doncaster Rovers teammates think there is just one play-off spot left to play for.

Rovers occupy that final slot after coming from behind to beat Crewe on Tuesday.

They trail fifth-placed Sheffield United by just three points but Wellens and Co reckon the top five will not be caught.

According to the 34-year-old midfielder, that leaves half of a congested division - including tomorrow’s opponents Port Vale who are 15th - battling it out for the final play-off spot.

“We think there’s only one spot left,” said Wellens.

“Sheffield United [in fifth] are too good. They’ll be in the play-offs.

“You need to win four or five games on the bounce because there’s ten or 12 teams can get in that last slot.

“If you don’t win four or five games, someone else will.

“We’ve got on a bit of a run at the right time but we can’t afford to get too ahead of ourselves. We’ve got to keep it going. As soon as you get distracted, you lose a game.”

Staying calm in possession was key to Rovers’ second half fightback against Crewe, said Wellens.

“The boss told us to relax a little bit at half time,” he said.

“He wants us to press at 100mph which is great. But when we get the ball back we’re still 100mph.

“We need to slow the game down and dictate the game. You can’t play football with the ball at 100mph.”

Rovers lost 3-1 to Port Vale when the sides met at the Keepmoat in August.
