Kyle Bennett thinks not going up this season might stand Doncaster Rovers in better stead in the longer term.
The 24-year-old, who hopes to sign a new contract with Rovers this summer, says everything is in place to give promotion a real shot next term.
“We’ve not been promoted but we’ve not been relegated,” said Bennett.
“As a club we’re in a good position.
“I think it might be a good thing we’ve not gone up this season.
“It might be better for us to have a season to steady ourselves and then go again.
“For me, if I’m still here, the aim next season has to be promotion.
“Every year you play you should be looking to get promotion, unless you’ve just come up - that’s a different story.
“We’ve had a year to settle ourselves now and next season we’ll have a right good go.
“The foundation is in place. This is a big club. Look at the stadium, we’ve got a nice training ground, a good manager - it’s all there for us so next year could be a big year for us.”
Bennett is among of clutch of senior players out of contract this summer but is adamant he wants to stay at Doncaster.
The winger’s days at the Keepmoat Stadium looked numbered a year ago after being farmed out on loan to Bradford City but his Rovers resurrection has been a source of personal pride this term.
“Whatever happens in the summer happens,” said Bennett. “I’ll look forward to having a conversation with the gaffer.
“I want to stay. I’ve been here four years now and it’s like home to me. I know everyone here and I know the place.
“It’s been nice to get a bit of support from the fans this season too.
“Obviously I went through quite a tough time [last season] and I’ve tried to win them over again this season. Hopefully I’ve done that.
“I’ve got a little bit of consistency into my game this season which I’ve been striving for for quite a while.
“So on a personal level that’s been quite pleasing.
“As a team we’re a little bit disappointed because as a squad we know we’re good enough to be up there.
“We’ve played well against Sheffield United the other week and we feel as if we’ve got a better squad than some of the teams up there, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.
“We’ve not performed when we needed to at times.”
