Nathan Tyson admits Doncaster Rovers underachieved this season.

The 33-year-old striker signed off with a hat trick against Scunthorpe United to take his personal tally to 14, his best goal return for nine years.

However, Rovers’ top scorer has admitted his disappointment at how the team’s campaign played out.

“We’ve massively underachieved,” he said. “Yet in saying that we could have ended up like Yeovil.

“The most important thing is that’s not happened.

“We’ve had a bit of success this season but we’ve not moved forward with it really. I think we’re going in the right direction though.

“There’s some very, very talented players here so hopefully a few of them can stay.”

He added: “It was great for me personally to get a hat trick but just great to get the three points too, doing the double over our rivals.

“We owed that to the fans who travelled to Notts County last week because we didn’t turn up at all.

“The last couple of games have been tough, particularly away at MK Dons.

“I think we got a bit of a schooling on how to play football, which is a shame really because at one stage we were in the play-off places.

“We didn’t move forward with that and it’s just been hard, it’s been very hard, just to get a good run going all season.

“It’s just been inconsistent and hopefully next season we can build on that.”

Tyson is out of contract this summer but has activated a clause entitling him to a second year at Doncaster.

“Hopefully we can get something sorted before I go on holiday and I can just enjoy my time off and keep myself fit,” he said. “Next season I think is something to be really excited about.”
