Luke McCullough says he is putting in the hard yards on the training ground to get up to speed with the demands of his new role.

The 21-year-old defender has started each of Rovers’ four games this season at right back rather than in his preferred centre back position.

And while the Northern Ireland international has admitted he was initially surprised at being asked to make the switch, he says he is doing everything in his power to make a success of it.

“Obviously it’s new for me, I’m still trying to adjust to it,” McCullough said.

“I think I’ve only played there once before. When we were in the Championship I played there against Blackburn and had a bit of a tough time.

“So it was a bit weird when I found out the gaffer wanted to use me there but I think I’m getting more comfortable and more used to it.

“Because I get more of the ball out there, and I like to be on the ball, it gives me a bit more freedom in that respect.

“The gaffer’s said to me I’m not really getting forward enough though. Obviously I’m a defender first and foremost and we want to be solid before we can start going forward.

“But he’s telling me I can bomb on at the right times and I’ll be able to do that the more I play there.

“I’m still learning. The more I play it, the better I’ll get at it.”

He added: “It’s more one v ones in the wider areas so you get a little bit more exposed than at centre back.

“I’ve been trying to do a few drills and get a bit fitter.

“There’s a lot more running and in some of the pre-season games I was very tired towards the end. It’s a different kind of fitness really so I’ve just been trying to get myself fitter and leaner.”
