MAKESHIFT striker David Syers was the two-goal hero of Doncaster Rovers’ remarkable 3-2 Capital One Cup second round win over Hull City at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The visitors looked set for a comfortable passage when they led 2-0 after just ten minutes, but Rovers battled back to get on terms after 57 minutes to set the scene for Syers late winner.

“I had no-one else to play up front,” said Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders explaining why he had gambled on midfielder Syers alongside Robbie Blake.

“He’s got an instinct; he knows where the ball is going to be. Not only that but he’s a team player and he runs and runs. He’s probably the fittest player in the squad and he’s got a hunger.

“We’ve got some players now who want to play for the club and roll their sleeves up.”

Saunders, who was without injured trio Chris Brown, Kyle Bennett and Martin Woods, is looking for a plum draw in the next round in the hope that he would then be given the go-ahead to strengthen his squad.
