Darren Ferguson has no doubt his players will show the same energy levels at Crewe Alexandra this afternoon as those demonstrated during their revival – simply because they have to.

Rovers know they must win at Gresty Road this afternoon to have any realistic hopes of securing League One survival.

But they head into the game buoyed by two wins and two draws from their last five games and a string of impressive performances which included relentless pressing of the opposition.

Boss Ferguson has called for more of the same and says his players are up to the task, despite having a long season of running in their legs and the squad being light on numbers.

“They have got the energy and they’ve shown it,” Ferguson told The Star.

“That can go out of the window because you just have to get on with it.

“You make sure you have the energy.

“And they’ve had a good gap since the win over Coventry. They’ll get a day extra before the Burton game on the last day but we’ve got to concentrate on Saturday first.

“The pressure drives it. Mentally, we’ve just got to get it done.

“We are pretty much down to the bare bones in terms of numbers but with two games to go, you’d like to think we can cover that.”

Ferguson revealed he had to give his players a gentle reminder of what is required after witnessing a dip in tempo in training on Tuesday.

But he is convinced no such words will be needed today.

“They’ve just got to be reminded we can’t take the foot off the gas,” he said.
