Gabriel Tamas could make a surprise return tonight as Doncaster Rovers aim to take a giant step towards Championship safety.

The Romanian defender trained yesterday and is anxious to play a part in Rovers’ run-in after missing the last six games with a fractured cheekbone.

With Abdoulaye Meite (calf) still struggling for fitness, Paul Dickov yesterday did not totally rule out a return for Tamas for tonight’s crucial visit of Bolton Wanderers.

The importance of this evening could yet tempt the Scot into risking the former West Bromwich Albion centre half.

By 10pm tonight Doncaster could be as many as ten, or as few as four, points clear of the drop zone with games fast running out.

Failure to take at least a point this evening would represent a big missed opportunity for Rovers following their disappointing home defeat to Birmingham on Saturday - and keep Rovers looking nervously over their shoulders ahead of a tricky looking last five games.

Tamas was scheduled to have a mask fitted last week after undergoing surgery following an off the field incident last month.

Dickov said: “We’ve just got to be careful with Gabi. It was a nasty injury and a nasty operation but he’s chomping at the bit.

“He just wants to play and if he’s ready, he’ll be in the squad.”

Richie Wellens is also rated 50/50 after missing Saturday’s defeat with a foot injury.
