THE rain held off for a pleasant day of racing at Doncaster last weekend, with cloudy conditions and the occasional spot of sunshine peeking through to make it feel ever so slightly like summer.

After a week of rain, conditions were soft for our 2.05pm start, changing to good to soft after the first race of the day, and it was a great afternoon with six good line-ups run between the start and 4.55pm close to proceedings.

In our class two opener, Richard Fahey-trained Chapter Seven at 10/1 led the way for the outsiders, with 9/1 shot Well Painted striding past the finishing post in second and 22/1 Mister Music taking third place. A great way to get the day’s racing underway and a nice lead in to the second race of the meeting, in which 22/1 shot Go Angellica raced ahead of the field to claim victory - a brave effort to beat Rio’s Pearl at 6/1 and Cruck Realta at 15/2.

The rest of the afternoon’s racing was more predictable but no less exciting, with hot favourite 11/10 Sir Maximilian racing to victory in the 3:15pm, under jockey William Buick. The fourth race was won by another favourite Tariq Too and in the fifth and sixth, Buick – who enjoyed a great day of racing - steered 6/4 shot Starboard and well-backed Camborne (5/1) to victory.

Looking ahead now, we have a great day of racing lined up on Sunday, with our Sheffield Wednesday Family Fun Day featuring Peppa Pig and George, taking place on Father’s Day.

The meeting, which will run throughout the afternoon, will be a real family extravaganza with some excellent entertainment for children and adults alike. Aside from lots of off the course activity, we have some great racing lined up. Seven races are set to take place between 2pm and 5:15pm - the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Handicap will be the highlight of the meeting, run over six furlongs.

Following this weekend’s racing, all eyes will, of course, be on our Construction Index live music raceday, with what we’re sure will be a stunning performance from iconic Cockney band Madness. The raceday, taking place on June 30, is set to be a sell-out, so anyone who wants to go should book quickly.
