Doncaster Belles’ under-16s bounced back to winning ways with an 8-1 victory over Sheffield United Blades, writes Marie Gibb.
Caitlin Gunnell was first to strike for Doncaster - at the second attempt - with 20 minutes of the clock gone.
The Blades hit straight back with the leveller and continued to apply the pressure but Belles’ shot-stopper Georgia Wattam made sure she kept her side in the game.
The Belles responded quickly and Anya Snow found the net from an acute angle from a Kaitlyn Doncaster well-timed cross.
The first half finished 3-1 to the Belles when an in-form Jade Smedley - who was crowned Doncaster’s ‘Belle of the Ball’ following the game - crossed a great ball from the left wing which was met by Libby Challinor who lobbed the ‘keeper.
In the second half the Belles were in control and hungry to extend their lead.
The fourth goal came from a corner and Kelly Griffiths made sure she was in the correct position to tuck the ball away.
Defensively, the Belles were sound with Abby Freeman leading the way with some perfectly-timed tackles.
The fifth goal came following a move down the wing which was dispatched beautifully by youngster Doncaster in the 50th minute for her first of the game.
Doncaster’s second goal soon followed after a fine, individual effort.
Kesley O’Driscoll fired in Belles’ seventh goal before a sweet 75th minute strike made it 8-1.
