Marko Marosi started in goal for Rovers, who have begun life without Sam Johnstone, in the FA Cup third round replay at Bristol City - but it was a sad night for Doncaster with Paul Dickov’s men slipping out of the contest.

The Slovakia U21 international had yet to start a game for Rovers but was thrown into the deep end following Johnstone’s recall by Manchester United and subsequent switch to Preston North End.

Marosi’s introduction was one of three changes made by Paul Dickov.

Also in was Curtis Main and Harry Middleton with Theo Robinson and Kyle Bennett dropping out.

Former Rovers loanee Jay Emmanuel-Thomas starts for City who also made three changes from their weekend win over Notts County.

In came Scott Wagstaff, Greg Cunningham and Marlon Pack for Joe Bryan, Wade Elliott and Luke Freeman.

Both sides had their share of the ball in the early ages, but quality chances were a rarity.

Korey Smith attempted an audacious long range shot as Marosi had strayed off his line but it went wide.

Then Aden Flint should have buried a free header from a corner but headed over the bar.

Bristol took the lead, though, at 36 minutes.

Marosi made a double save from a corner but Emmanuel-Thomas found the net against his old side.

Five minutes later, Richie Wellens put Curtis Main through but he swept it wide.

In the second half Emmanuel-Thomas continued to be a persistent danger, trying to pass and cross to forwards in dangerous positions.

At the other end, Harry Middleton fired a decent chance over the cross bar and was subbed soon afterwards.

Rovers seemed more cohesive when Theo Robinson and Nathan Tyson entered the fray.

But the best player on the park, Emmanuel-Thomas made it 2-0 at Ashton Gate, on 79 minutes, cashing in on a three-on-two counter attack.

Rovers went seeking a late reward, but it was not to be.
